Acupuncture is part of the 4000 year old practice of Traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow (Qi, pronounced “chee”) through the body that is responsible for overall health. Disruption of the energy flow is thought to cause disease. By applying acupuncture to certain points, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi, thereby improving health.

Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals can trigger the release of the body’s own analgesics thereby interrupting pain signals. They can also reduce pro-inflammatory markers and proteins in the body which can result in less inflammation and, as well, help release and regulate hormones, endorphins and other biochemical responses in the body. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.

Studies have shown that acupuncture is effective for a variety of conditions. Examples include: migraines, sports related injuries, back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, knee pain, muscle pain, bell’s palsy, women’s health including morning sickness and labour induction, sciatica, sprains, arthritis, facial pain, anxiety, depression, PTDS, constipation, abdominal discomfort, digestive issues and weight loss.

Harbourview Clinic has been offering acupuncture services for 12 years. In this period, the clinic has helped many patients increase their health and wellbeing through acupuncture treatment. Please contact Amanda Buckle to schedule an appointment to see how this alternative form of medical treatment can assist you.
