Foot Pain & Foot Care in Downtown Vancouver
Foot pain can turn simple activities like walking to work, standing at your desk, or getting through a workout into a challenge. And while it’s tempting to focus only on the painful spot, the way the bones and joints of your feet move may also be part of the picture.
At Harbourview Chiropractic & Massage Clinic, Dr. Glen Woodman takes a biomechanical approach, looking at how your feet move and how those mechanics may influence the rest of your body.
Why Foot Mechanics Matter
Each foot contains 26 bones working together to absorb pressure, maintain balance, and help propel you forward. When movement within the foot changes, your body may adapt by altering the way you stand or walk.
For example, changes around the navicular bone and arch can affect how the foot loads and how the toes move as you step. These mechanical changes may be associated with heel and arch discomfort, plantar fascia irritation, or pain beneath the toes.
Because your feet are your foundation, altered mechanics may also affect movement at the ankles, knees, hips, and lower back.
Signs It’s Time to Look at Your Feet
Consider an assessment if you’re experiencing:
- Sharp heel pain during your first steps in the morning
- Aching underneath the foot after prolonged standing
- Burning or localized discomfort beneath the toes
- Uneven wear on the soles of your shoes
- Knee, hip, or lower back discomfort alongside foot concerns
Different conditions can cause similar symptoms, so understanding what’s contributing to yours is an important first step.
Looking Beyond the Painful Spot
Dr. Woodman assesses how your feet and lower body move together rather than making assumptions based on symptoms alone. Depending on his findings, care may include chiropractic techniques addressing restricted joints and recommendations for footwear or custom orthotics.
Our practice also offers computerized GaitScan™ assessment and prescription orthotics when appropriate.
Foot Pain & Custom Orthotics Success
Kate’s foot discomfort had reached the point where she could no longer exercise and was finding it harder to enjoy her usual activities. She came to Dr. Woodman, who analyzed her stride using an advanced gait scan to assess the biomechanics and movement of her feet.
Based on the digital scan, Dr. Woodman prescribed custom orthotics tailored to her feet. After several weeks of chiropractic care and wearing her new orthotics, Kate reported being back to her regular running routine and, best of all, chasing her kids around Stanley Park again.
Kate’s story reflects her individual experience. Results may vary.
