Shoulder Pain Treatment in Downtown Vancouver

man sitting at desk with shoulder painReaching for a cupboard, sleeping through the night, or finishing a golf swing shouldn’t come with a jolt of pain. At Harbourview Chiropractic & Massage Clinic, Dr. Glen Woodman looks beyond the shoulder itself to determine what may be causing your discomfort. Understanding what’s driving the pain is the first step toward helping your shoulder move the way it should again.

When a Deep Ache Signals More Than a Strain

Shoulder pain rarely comes from the shoulder alone. Micro-tears or inflammation in the rotator cuff can cause a persistent, deep ache, while impingement happens when tendons become pinched within the joint space, often alongside a rounded, desk-bound posture. In other cases, the real source sits higher up: pinched nerves or joint dysfunction in the neck can refer pain to the shoulder, making the joint itself feel like a problem when it isn’t.

Why Desk Posture and Repetitive Strain Add Up

Common contributors to shoulder pain include:

  • Rounded, forward-shoulder posture from long hours at a desk or on a phone
  • Repetitive overhead movement in sports like golf, swimming, or tennis
  • Untreated neck tension that refers pain into the shoulder
  • Progressive joint stiffness, sometimes developing into frozen shoulder
  • Cartilage wear from osteoarthritis
  • Old injuries that never fully rehabilitated

Telling a Minor Strain From Something More Serious

A minor strain usually brings a dull ache, mild swelling, and a range of motion that stays mostly intact, easing within three to seven days of rest and ice. A more serious issue looks different. Watch for sharp or tearing pain, visible deformity, an inability to lift the arm, a locked or frozen feeling, or numbness and tingling running down the arm. Night pain that repeatedly interrupts sleep is also a sign worth having assessed.

How Long Is Too Long to Live With Shoulder Pain?

If pain has lasted more than a week, keeps waking you up, or is limiting your backswing, your workout, or your reach overhead, it’s a good idea to get a professional evaluation rather than waiting it out.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Your assessment starts with a cervical spine examination to determine whether a pinched nerve or joint dysfunction in the neck may be contributing to shoulder pain. From there, biomechanical analysis looks at how the shoulder blade tracks and how posture may be contributing, alongside orthopedic and neurological testing to help identify the structures involved.

We also assess muscle tension, areas of tenderness, and range of motion to better understand how your shoulder is functioning. Care may include precise adjustments to the neck, upper back, and shoulder joint together with targeted soft tissue therapy to address muscle tension and movement restrictions. Functional rehabilitation rounds things out with progressive strengthening for the rotator cuff and upper back to help improve stability and movement over time. Depending on your needs, we may also recommend simple stretches, posture strategies, and activity modifications to help reduce strain on your shoulder between visits.
